Emotional Rollercoaster

Back where everything began, in the small town of Oriental, the former lovers are begging to know each other again. Amanda is learning about Dawson’s job and how he should’ve died in many explosions in the Oil Rig. But, she also analyzed the truth of what happened to Dr. David Bonner that blurry night, she understood that it was an accident and that he was falsely incriminated. Dawson felt terrible about what he had done to the Bonner family, so he was helping them economically, by sending monthly checks anonymously.  Little did Dawson knew that his cousin, Ted wanted to kill him and as soon as he arrived, he and his brother, Abby were planning Dawson’s death, still the Oil Rig worker was really careful while in town. He knew there were unfinished businesses in his family. Amanda’s life didn’t turn out as planned, she married someone great, or at least she thought he was great. She married a man named Frank. They had four kids, but sadly one of them, Bea, was diagnosed with brain cancer and died at the age of one.  This was devastating for everyone, especially Frank. He became an alcoholic and Amanda was starting to love Frank, less and less every day.

It is obvious Amanda is having a hard dealing with her marriage; she is stressed and doesn’t want to talk about any of this with her mother, Evelyn Collier. But, Evelyn knows, after all, she is her mother. Mothers have a sixth sense: detecting their children’s sadness. And when Amanda came back home for Tuck`s funeral, without Frank, everything was clear. Evelyn confirmed what she already knew.

“If Amanda had asked, Evelyn (…) would have reminded her daughter in the same breath that the grass isn`t always greener on the other side. What the young generation didn’t understand was that the grass was greenest where it`s watered, which meant taht both Frank and Amanda had to get out of their hoses if they wanted to make things better” (90).

Amanda`s mother is totally correct in this situation, she is older that her daughter and therefore, more wise and intelligent. Grown-ups and elderly are almost every time correct or on the right path. They are the ones with all the experiences and lessons and even the mistakes.  We can learn from them. And if they are family, everything is safer, especially if it comes from mom.

The relationship between Amanda and Evelyn is not the best, they have their issues.  But, one thing is for sure, Amanda is jealous of how organized her mother`s life is. It is like everything in her life is written on a book, with instructions and tips.

“She had always been confident about who she was and the choices she`d made, as though life were a song and all she had to do was march in rhythm to it, know that everything would work out as planned” (96).

I don’t understand why Amanda is jealous of her mother, yes her life may be perfectly planned and organized, but where is all the fun? The beauty of life is to not know what will happen next. To live on the edge and enjoy every second. Also, sometimes is better not to know some stuff and just live in the moment. And, personally, I prefer to dance my songs, than to march them.

My favorite How I Met your Mother quote.

I believe there is a reason why Tuck wanted both of them together on this journey, this weekend, his funeral. I think he knew they were made for each and Tuck wanted them to be a whole. There are a lot of obstacles, Dawson’s unusual family and Amanda`s life back at her home. But, the question remains, Can love truly rewrite the past?
